DescriptionA peasant woman is wearing a black dress, a white blouse and a crimson handkerchief, the traditional Italian headgear. However, this dreamer is seen in neutral background and its melancholy recalls Corot's half-length figures painted in his later career. Corot's Italian subjects have always been very much sought after and this work - which is not identified by Robaut and only ascribed to Corot in the 1970 National Gallery catalogue (n°3239) - was highly praised by Bodkin (1932, plate XX) who saw in this "young woman… [a] little masterpiece … as incisive as a portrait by Degas".On View
