DescriptionIn dense undergrowth, three figures are standing on a flight of steps. Tall trees border the steps that lead towards the sky visible in the background. Foliage overruns the whole composition in a green atmosphere. This little canvas is dated between 1865 and 1870 by Robaut (1905, vol. III, p.366, n°2340, repr.). It contrasts with the larger and more ambitious airy Souvenirs series of the period, but it is in the same soft and diffuse light, and in the same paint which is thinner than in his earlier works. This lovely landscape, reminding Watteau's paintings or Oudry's drawings, is very romantic.
