DescriptionRobaut saw this small painting at Félix Gérard's in 1880. One in few paintings on wood, he dated it c. 1855-60 and named it Pond, Hilly meadow, a Cow and a Cowgirl in the Foreground (1905, vol. II, p.280, n°876, repr.). It became Landscape: Woman with a Cow in the 1904 exhibition catalogue. Harrison (1908) saw in this "exquisite sketch, seemingly painted direct from nature", a Summer Morning which title was kept until today: Indeed, in a misty summer morning, a peasant woman is driving a cow through a sodden field. The light foliage of trees and hedges is particularly lovely in the yellow light of dawn which has turned the grass into a soft green.Behind a pool, a woman drives a cow towards the left. An open gateway leads to a background of trees and hedges.
