DescriptionYoung Woman seated, hands crossed on her knees was the title given by Robaut (1905, vol. II, p.314, n°1024, repr. p.315) who identified this figure alongside two similar peasant women (n°1025 and n°1026) painted in the Limousin region in the 1850's.Previously, Corot had painted several half-length figures of women in a landscape such as the 1838 Harvester (Boston) or Young Girl in a Pink Skirt (Williamstown), dated c. 1840-45. But is this one is painted on neutral background, as in the later Woman with the Pearl (Louvre). The limited palette and statuesque pose of this melancholic figure, who is probably not a portrait, create a timeless image.
A woman sits clasping her left knee. She wears a green dress with white striped bodice and sleeves and a green cap with a plum coloured band.
