DescriptionSigned and dated on the first day of 1875, this quickly painted landscape is one of Corot's last paintings. As often in his works, the composition reminds another one: the trees on the left, the deserted landscape on the right with two little figures on the foreground are very similar to Hamlet and the Gravedigger (Copenhagen) dated c.1873-1874. The difference stands in its palette of softer colours. This work, identified by Robaut (1905, vol. III, p.366, n°2354, repr.) was probably painted in Ville d'Avray, Corot's home near Paris, where he was staying at the end of 1874. That year, as he was not awarded a gold medal at the Salon, his friends offered him a medal of Honour which was designed by Geoffroy de Chaume. A ceremony took place at the Grand Hôtel, in Paris, on the 29th of December 1874. Then, from the 9th of January ((Robaut, 1905, vol. IV, p.347) Corot spent a few days in Coubron, near Monfermeil, north of Paris, at Mrs. Gratiot's home, his friend from 1867. He died in Paris on the 22nd of February 1875.
This is a landscape painting showing a pink and blue sky with a prominent group of tree on the left. The scene recedes into the background, with foliage and greenery stretching into the far distance. There are two figures on the right in the immediate foreground.
