DescriptionCaroline Tisdall was the art critic for the Guardian newspaper in England, and collaborated with influential contemporary artist Joseph Beuys, frequently photographing his actions. She organised the exhibition The Secret Block for the Secret Person in Ireland for the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, and accompanied Beuys to Ireland when the exhibition was shown at Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin and the Ulster Museum, Belfast in 1974. While giving a lecture during the exhibition, Beuys wrote and drew on three blackboards, now in the Hugh Lane Gallery collection, and which later generated much controversy. This group of photos by Tisdall document not only Beuys’s lecture at Hugh Lane Gallery but also events across the island of Ireland, reflecting Beuys’s interest in the Celtic world.
