DescriptionFrom the composition of the watercolour, the artist appears to have been viewing the scene from a balcony opposite the house being painted, presumably the artist's studio in London. There is a wrought iron balcony railing in the immediate foreground, from which can be seen typical terraced early Victorian four storey town houses. A balcony runs along the first floor of the houses. The two visible front doors have a simple portico with freestanding Doric columns and steps leading up. In front of the houses is a low stonewall with wrought iron railings and a green hedge growing behind. There are four labourers engaged in painting the two primary houses, two of the men are leaning over the roof balustrade and painting it, while a third is on a ladder on the first floor balcony of the central house, and painting the external lintel on the second storey window. A fourth painter holds the ladder. There is a fifth man standing with his left arm leaning on the gate post of the central house and looking up at the front door. There is a pram in front of the low wall.
