DescriptionThis is an interior scene set in late 17th century. On the right is a woman in a black puritan style dress with a white lace collar. She is holding back the edge of a curtain on a four-poster bed. She is not looking in at the bed, but has turned her head away and is gazing at the ground, even though she is grasping the arm of a man dressed like a musketeer, who is standing next to her. The man has a wide brimmed hat in his hands, his cloak draped over his shoulder and leaning on a fencing sword in a black scabbard. The man is wearing a red jacket and trousers and also looks forlornly at the ground. A third figure in black clothing kneels at the end of the bed.
