DescriptionThis is a three-quarter length portrait of a woman, Dora Sigerson Shorter. She is facing right and stares vacantly, without engaging the viewer. She is wearing a black dress with a wide white lace collar and lace cuffs. She appears to be sitting on a park bench with foliage all around. She is holding something in her left hand; it looks like a small metallic cylinder attached to a piece of paper.

Dora Sigerson (1866 - 1918) was an Irish poet, who after her marriage in 1895 wrote under the name Dora Sigerson Shorter. She born in Dublin, daughter of George Sigerson, a surgeon and writer, and Hester (nee Varian) also a writer. She was a major figure of the Irish Literary revival, publishing many collections of poetry from 1893; and a close friend of Katharine Tynan.

Her husband was Clement Shorter, an English journalist; they lived in London.
