DescriptionThis pen and ink wash drawing shows the interior of an Italianate building. A flight of stairs in the centre passes upwards through an arched entrance: the steps spill into the room in the manner of Michelangelo's staircase in the Medici Library in Florence, however, these steps are rectangular. There are two classical statues on pedestals on either side of the entrance with windows above running along the frieze, just below the cornice. The entrance is surrounded on both sides by engaged Ionic pilasters, rising up to a triangular pediment cut by an oval oculus, with a cushioned frieze below. The floor is tiled like a chessboard. Emerging from the entrance and slowly coming down the stairs is an old woman dressed entirely in black with a hat and veil. There is a door on the right and a lamp hanging from the ceiling.
