DescriptionHugh Lane favoured a site in St Stephen’s Green for a purpose built gallery of modern art and invited his friend the architect Edwin Lutyens to make a design. However, the proposal was opposed by Lord Ardilaun who had donated the park to the people of Dublin. The watercolour here shows a classically inspired building with niches and a flight of steps leading to an entrance colonnade. In the background the Royal College of Surgeons is visible showing the proposed location as being on the west side of St Stephen’s Green. (JO'D)
