DescriptionA view from a height of narrow winding street, half in deep shadow. Sunshine reflects off the sea in the background where small boats lie at anchor in a harbour. Four figures, one of them a child, walk along the street facing towards the viewer.

Painted in tones of grey, light brown and pink.

Antral was born at Chalons-sur-Marne, France. He studied in the studio of Cormon, a successful history and portrait painter. After the first world war he was appointed a member of the Committee of the Alson de Independants where he exhibited regularly until his death. While he also painted portraits, flowerpieces and still-lifts, he is best known for his land, town and seascapes, particularly his port and harbour scenes.

The coast of Finistere was a very popular location among artists from the 1860's onwards. Le Conquet, Finistere, which depicts a winding street in a hilly harbour town, shows the stylistic influence of primitive painters such as Rousseau.
