DescriptionDuncan worked in Ireland from about 1908 to 1916. She was a close friend of the artist Estella Solomons. As a member of the Gaelic League she adopted the Irish version of her name. About 1911 she executed portrait etchings of James Stephens, Seumas O’Sullivan and George Russell, which were noted favourably by Thomas Bodkin. James Stephens was typical of the new radical generation that came of age in the early 1900s. He was attracted by socialist ideas and cultural nationalism. This found expression through his prolific literary output, including The Charwoman’s Daughter published in 1912. It provided one of the finest literary insights into tenement life.On View
