DescriptionEstella Solomons’ family were prominent among the Jewish community in Dublin. Her brother Bethel Solomons was President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, an Irish international rugby player, and is also mentioned in Finnegan’s Wake. Estella Solomons joined the Ranelagh branch of Cumann na mBan and during the Civil War her studio was used a safe house by the anti-treaty side. Following the death of her parents, she married Seumas O’Sullivan, and worked with him on The Dublin Magazine, a successful literary and art publication. James Stephens (1882-1950) was a novelist, poet and dedicated republican. Solomons and Stephens were close friends and neighbours for a time on Brunswick (now Pearse) Street.
