DescriptionIn this small painting, Corot shows a woman guiding a punt with a long oar, on a still river. This landscape evokes a misty and early morning mood. Its composition is reduced to two crossing lines: the horizontal punt, echoing the still river and the purple hills on the horizon, and the vertical woman parallel to the thin birches - or poplars - in the background. Dated c.1865 by Robaut (1905, vol. III, p. 194, n°1795, repr.), it has the same characteristic palette of greens and silvers as in Souvenir de Mortefontaine exhibited at the Salon in 1864. In spring 1865, Corot spent some time in Mantes, in the Seine valley, which perhaps inspired this poetic landscape. In the right foreground a woman stands in a punt pushing with a long oar; left foreground green grass, behind the pool tall trees; violet hills on the horizon.
