DescriptionWhile painting a wide range of subjects in his career, Henry Scott Tuke is best known today as a painter of swimming, boating and sunbathing boys and young men. Here he depicts a young man, naked apart from a loincloth, offering a prayer or greeting to the morning sun. George Fouracre, the son of Tuke's landlady, modelled for the figure, while Henry Allen was the model for the head. While the figure poses in the form of a cross, the subject is more in keeping with Tuke's personal theology, worshipping 'God in nature'.
