DescriptionFrink was one of the most gifted British sculptors of the post-war period. Her work developed within the modernist framework established by Henry Moore and her subjects, apart from her earliest drawings, concentrated on animals, birds and men. Within this range of subject matter, she evolved a characteristically unsentimental and powerful imagery of an enduring and timeless quality. In recognition of her contribution to sculpture she received the title CBE in 1969 and was created a Dame of the British Empire in 1982.

As a sculptor Frink preferred the subjects of men and animals rather than the female form. She had keen interest in horses and dogs and preferred country life to that of the city. Her horses and other animals were archetypal images rather than realistic portrayals.

The long legged cock is turned slightly to the right while the head, set on a big rock, is turned to the left, the sharp beak open. The bronze is cut away to suggest feathers.
