DescriptionTheodore Rousseau was a prominent member of the Barbizon school of painters, an informal groups of artists united in their naturalistic and objective approach to painting from nature. The group took their name from Barbizon, a small village on the edge of the forest of Fountainbleu. The moonlight in this painting illuminates the night sky, the young bathers and pond in which they are swimming. While making studies from nature out of doors, many of the more finished works of the Barbizon painters would have been completed in their studios. (JO'D)On View
