DescriptionThis painting shows the interior of a chapel in a monastery. In the centre there is an altar where a priest is celebrating a benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. There are also three altar boys standing around the altar: two are holding candles; another is holding a thurible (censer). On either side of the altar are stalls with monks standing in them. The monks are all wearing brown habits. In the foreground on the left is an elderly monk seating, while on the right is another monk kneeling down in prayer with his back to the altar. The interior is lit from a single small window at the back of the chapel directly under an arch. After the arch the room expands into a large chamber, with paintings hanging on both sides above the panelling of the stalls. Long stark shadows are cast across the chapel.
