DescriptionMesdag was one of the leading fi gures of the Hague School, the most important artistic movement in the Netherlands in the 19th century. Seascapes and the lives of fi shermen in the village of Scheveningen, close to The Hague were the foremost subjects in his painting. With his wife, Mesdag was a collector of the French masters from the Barbizon School, as well as accumulating work by friends who were involved in the Hague School. Mesdag was also an enthusiastic collector of the work of the Italian artist Antonio Mancini. (JO'D)
