DescriptionJongkind, a pupil of Daubigny’s, was fascinated by the fleeting effects of light. The figures gliding along on their ice skates are like silhouettes against the golden sunset, painted in rich impasto oil paint. Even though the light is fading with the short winter day, there are many people out enjoying themselves on the frozen river. In the background are windmills, showing this to be Holland, the country where Jongkind was born. While Jongkind painted many scenes similar to skating in Holland, their particular work is thought to have been painted by someone imitating his composition and style. (JO'D)On View
