DescriptionYinka Shonibare explores colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalisation. Climate Shit Drawing 6 deals with climate change. Shonibare collages images of flowers and airplanes, pieces of newspaper and fabric, specifically Dutch or ‘African’ wax printed cotton. Its symbolic link to West African culture and its complex history is crucial to Shonibare’s work. The brightly-coloured, patterned fabric was initially inspired by Indonesian Batik design. It was mass-produced in Holland and then sold to West Africa in the 19th century where it increased in popularity and demand. Shonibare uses the fabric’s history as a metaphor to express his interest in the colonial relationships between Africa and Europe. On View
