DescriptionThis is a characteristic picture by Hone of a coastal scene, with cattle grazing in the flat landscape of north County Dublin. As in many such paintings, the artist shows light and shadow passing on the beach, sand dunes, a strip of blue sea, and magnificent clouds lit by sunlight above the Irish sea. Four cows, brown and white, and black and white, are shown moving slowly across the dunes, while the cow herd is seated in shadow, daydreaming, and a lone red sail breaks the expanse of the sea. Our attention is drawn to the clouds that drift slowly across the sky. Hone indicates with impastoed brushstrokes the sunshine that lights up the upper part of the cloud, and with great delicacy the light that illuminates the trail of small clouds above the horizon.
