DescriptionHone evokes a tranquil evening mood, featuring a grouping of trees on a bank, reflected in the waters of a river or lake. The distant hill catches the last light of the day, while the clouds are suffused with pink, reflected in the water. There is an expanse of cheerful blue sky at the top of the composition. The location of this landscape is not known; the river scene with trees, including a poplar, suggests a French subject. However, the broad handling and bold paintwork indicate work from the middle of Hone's career, perhaps painted when he was back home in Ireland (From: The Collection Revealed: Nathaniel Hone, p. 6)On View
