DescriptionThis fan shaped monochromatic watercolour has at its centre a woman in an early 19th century dress wearing a wide brimmed hat. She is lounging on a beach, with a dog (some form of setter) looking at her and resting beside her lap. At her feet is a girl, with her back to the viewer, her head hanging downwards. In the background is the sea and clouds on the horizon line. Above the clouds is a medallion with an image of a naked cherub in it. Below this scene, at the extremities of the fan, are two more medallion shaped scenes. On the left a woman in a white dress and hat stands beside a thin tree, which is bent over, and touching the ground. The medallion on the right shows a group of three women, one is a state of undress, while the others stand beside her. One of the standing women is wearing a heavy shawl and a bonnet. The areas between the three scenes have been decorated with floral designs carefully constructed in dots, giving a stippled affect. On View
