DescriptionBarye originally trained as an engraver but is perhaps most notably known as a sculptor of exotic animals, and was especially popular in America. He spent much of his time in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris studying nature from life. This painting of the forest of Fountainebleau, not far from Paris, is one of a several painted by Baryre on the subject. Two sculptures of a Lion and a Lioness which belonged to Hugh Lane and were shown when the gallery first opened in 1908 are now in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
