DescriptionEvie Hone began her career as a painter and studied first with Walter Sickert in London before going to Paris where she, and Mainie Jellett, studied with André Lhote and then Albert Gleizes. Later on, she began to tire of non-representational work and turned to the technique of stained glass. For the rest of her life she devoted herself to the medium and was greatly influenced by Georges Rouault's work in this medium. Like Rouault, she was a devout Catholic. A period of study with Wilhelmina Geddes provided Hone with a sound grasp of the fundamental requirements of stained glass. After her training she worked at the studio of An Túr Gloine, a stained glass co-operative set up by Sarah Purser. Deposition is a late work in which the artist depicts the moment when the body of Christ has been removed from the cross. His mother and four other figures, surround him. Two of these figures are preparing to wrap the body in cloth. The figure of Saint John is in the lower right foreground. Hone's technique differs to that of Harry Clarke who made extensive use of acid. Instead, she built up contrasts of tone by applying colour to the glass. The simplicity and harmony of the colours belies the deeply expressive quality of Hone's work.
Hone had a successful career with major commissions both in Ireland and abroad. Examples of her work can be found in Eton College Chapel in England and Blackrock College in Dublin.(MC)
Additional information: The composition of the Hugh Lane Deposition relates very closely to Evie Hone's painted Stations of the Cross made for Kiltullagh Church, Co. Galway. An article written by James White in 1955 includes an image of the Fourteenth Station, Kiltullagh Church. Evie Hone also made a series of gouache studies for this 1945-6 Kiltullagh Church commission.
