DescriptionDaniel Chester French achieved prominence as the leading American monumental sculptor of the early 20th century. His genial competitor was Augustus Saint Gaudens. His best known work is the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. The sculpture is composed of twenty blocks of Georgia marble and was carved in the Bronx studio of the Piccirilli Brothers. It was assembled on site in Washington. The figure of Lincoln is seated full face in a chair his arms resting on the arms of the chair. His right leg is drawn slightly back.
