DescriptionThe context of this intriguing painting, purchased by Hugh Lane around 1902, remains a mystery. The identities of the both the sitter and the artist are unknown. The woman is deep in thought, her eyes averted from the viewer. Apart from her colourful headscarf, she is naked with her arms crossed. WHen the gallery opened in 1908 the painting was attributed to Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876), a French artist who painted the people and landscape of Algeria. Eugène Delacroix and Marie-Guillemine Benoist have also been suggested as the possible painter of this work.
