DescriptionClara Christian studied at the Slade School of Art in London and in 1905 married Dublin City Architect, C.J. McCarthy. Degas’s painting 'A Peasant Woman' was purchased through subscriptions collected by her in 1905 and exhibited when the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art first opened in 1908. 'Meditations' is a fine example of an Edwardian painting where the artist displays her great skill in depicting fabrics, reflective surfaces and creating mood. Shown in an interior with sunlight illuminating the room, the sitter is seated alone in a moment of contemplation perhaps before guests arrive as suggested by the teaset reflected in the background mirror.
