DescriptionWhile working for the Dublin public library service as well as attending the National College of Art, Una Watters was encouraged to become a painter by Maurice MacGonigal. Her work has been described as 'eclectic , fusing elements from many sources, memories from many times, to render her own developing perception of the divine earth comedy in its shifting kaleidoscope of light and shape.' The People's Gardens was purchased by The Thomas Haverty Trust and given to the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in 1966. The painting shows Watter's distinctively angular modernist style with its strong contrasts of light and shade and areas of pure colour, and is reminiscent of the French pointillist artist Seurat and his paintings of people at their leisure in an outdoor setting. On View
