DescriptionIn 1923 Swanzy travelled to Hawaii where she stayed with an aunt. 'Honolulu Garden' is a direct response to the sensual beauty and bright colour of the surroundings. Swanzy has abandoned all traces of her own distinctively lyrical Cubist style. The tropical landscape and brilliant light captured her imagination and inspired her to comment that she was 'stunned at how many greens that there were in the world'. Here, she has depicted the rich tapestry of the palm and coconut groves, the banana and papaya trees and the criss-cross shadows cast by their jagged leaves on the sandy pathways. On View
