DescriptionThe People’s Portraits 1899–1918 stems from Amanda Dunsmore’s time as artist in residence at the HM Prison Maze in 1998. The work comprises 100 printed portraits taken from late 19th and early 20th century of prisoners dating from before Ireland’s partition - the final date of the selection is 1918, before the partition of Ireland. The photos were selected from thousands of images in the Millisle prisoner photographic collection and were mainly taken at Armagh prison by two prison officers who were trained as photographers. The People’s Portraits 1899 - 1918 was first exhibited at Hugh Lane Gallery in 2018 as part of the exhibition Amanda Dunsmore: Keeper, which marked the 20-year anniversary of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. On View
