DescriptionThis untitled painting, an early work, has as its basis a geometric structure, which the artist has obscured by frenetic brushwork. Near the centre of the painting two triangular shapes pivot around each other, one a pale spare form, the other dark and brooding, whose shape is partially concealed by nebulous brushwork. The former's linear clarity creates a sense of serenity compared with the dense activity of the textured lower form. A jittery tension is created between the triangles and the vertical strips which face them and which seem, as though magnetically, to attract the needle-like brushstrokes from one side of the canvas to the other. In this work Tyrrell has combined the austerity and discipline of a basically geometric division of his surfaces with restrained but expressionistic brushwork and colour so that it is both stark and subtle, solid and sensuous.
