DescriptionThis untitled painting, an early work, has as its basis a geometric structure, which the artist has obscured by frenetic brushwork. Near the centre of the painting two triangular shapes pivot around each other, one a pale spare form, the other dark and brooding, whose shape is partially concealed by nebulous brushwork. The former's linear clarity creates a sense of serenity compared with the dense activity of the textured lower form. A jittery tension is created between the triangles and the vertical strips which face them and which seem, as though magnetically, to attract the needle-like brushstrokes from one side of the canvas to the other. In this work Tyrrell has combined the austerity and discipline of a basically geometric division of his surfaces with restrained but expressionistic brushwork and colour so that it is both stark and subtle, solid and sensuous.(Extract from 'Images and Insights', Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin, 1993, p. 172)
