Description'Landscape' is typical of Lhote's colourful adaptation of Cubism. In contrast to the monochrome tones of the early Cubist works of Picasso and Braque, Lhote favoured the use of bright colours such as orange. His Cubism is based on observation of nature, and subsequently the reduction of these natural elements to geometric forms. This is evident in 'Landscape' where the pine trees are reduced to triangles. The composition is based on an upward diagonal division of the canvas from left to right. Lhote did not distort forms as completely as some of the other Cubists and the subject can be easily 'read'. Nonetheless, elements of Cubism are evident, such as the use of multiple viewpoints in his depiction of the buildings. The location of this subject is the quiet hill town of Mirmande near Valence where Lhote held summer classes each year.
