DescriptionThe 'Statue of Vertumnus at Frascati' was painted during one of Sargent's visits to Frascati in October either 1906 or 1907. The statue and fountain of Vertumnus, the Roman god of change, gardens and orchards, framed by two columns, is located in the gardens of the 16th century Villa Falconieri, which overlooks Frascati, east of Rome. While there, Sargent stayed at the Grand Hotel with his sister Emily, her friend Eliza Wedgwood and Jane and Wilfrid de Glehn. He spent much time painting with the de Glehns in the gardens of the villas nearby, including the gardens of the Falconieri.
