DescriptionSome Men and a Picture is one of a series of preparatory sketches for William Orpen’s Homage to Manet, 1909 (Manchester City Art Galleries). It depicts the Irish writer, George Moore seated on the left, with a group of figures on the right who became Philip Wilson Steer, Walter Sickert, DS MacColl, Hugh Lane and Henry Tonks in the final painting. The painting in the background is Edouard Manet’s celebrated Eva Gonzalès, which is part of the Sir Hugh Lane Bequest 1917. Lane bought the painting for Hugh Lane Gallery and before sending it to Dublin, he hung it in 8 Bolton Gardens, where Orpen had his studio.
