DescriptionJames William Lane (b. 1846) was Hugh Lane's father. He was educated at Winchester College, Hampshire. Declining to join the family legal firm (which is still in existence as Guest, Lane and Williams), he enrolled as a divinity student at Trinity College, Dublin in the autumn of 1864 at the age of eighteen. He left Trinity and in 1869 graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In the same year he was made deacon in the diocese of York. The following year he received his Master's degree and, as an ordained priest was appointed to Saint Mary's in Hull. This was followed by a period of service at Saint John's, Hull from 1870 to 1873. Some years previously, while he was a student in Dublin, James met Frances Adelaide Persse, whom he married.
