DescriptionAdelaide Persse’s family home was at Roxborough House, Co. Galway. Considered the family beauty her engagement to the Rev. James Lane was received with great disappointment by her family and The Rev. and Mrs Lane were unfortunately to discover in married life that they had little in common except their children. Adelaide was regarded as a kind mother and of all her children she was particularly close to Hugh. He learned the piano and rudimentary French as a child but his chief joy according to William Orpen was needlework and objects while with his mother’s family at Roxborough looking at the pictures there.
