DescriptionThis portrait of the innovative landscape painter Nathaniel Hone was commissioned by Hugh Lane as part of the series of distinguished Irishmen and Women which included poets, artists, writers, politicians, patriots and dramatists of the day and shown on the staircase of Clonmell House, Harcourt Street, the original home of the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art which first opened in 1908. Hugh Lane originally asked a somewhat reluctant John Butler Yeats to undertake the portrait series but the commission was then continued by William Orpen. This portrait of Hone was not one that Hone's wife particularly liked. The artist had a cold at the time and sittings were difficult to arrange.
