DescriptionDáirine (or Doreen) Vanston was born in 1903 in Dublin and studied art at Goldsmith’s College, London and at the Académie Ranson, Paris. She also lived for a time in Costa Rica, which influenced her palette. Often depicting landscapes, she fused elements from key 20th century art movements in a very personal style. Her expressionist use of colour is a distinctive feature of her paintings. On returning to Dublin after the Second World War broke out, she met English artist Basil Rakoczi and became associated with the White Stag Group in Dublin with whom she often exhibited. She showed at the first Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1943 and with the Exhibition of Independent Artists from 1960.
