DescriptionOur Kind is a short film and accompanying installation in which Alan Phelan imagines an alternative future for the diplomat and Irish nationalist Roger Casement had he not been executed for treason in 1916. The film is set 25 years later in 1941 when Casement is in exile in Norway with his former manservant and now partner, Eivind Adler Christensen. It also features friend and supporter of Casement, Alice Stopford Greene, who together with Christensen, betray their relationship with Casement. Phelan’s narrative unfolds against the backdrop of ensuing political events, including the Second World War. Our Kind was commissioned by Hugh Lane Gallery as a response to the exhibition High Treason: Roger Casement which centred on Sir John Lavery’s work The Court of Criminal Appeal. London 1916.
