DescriptionRaimundo de Madrazo y Garreta came from a distinguished family of painters: his grandfather Jose de Madrazo worked with the French painter David and became the leading academic painter of his day in Spain. Raimundo’s father, Federico, trained under Ingres and was court painter to Isabel II of Spain. Both father and grandfather were Directors of the Madrid Academy. This study of a woman before a decorative background is similar in mood and atmosphere, and perhaps model, to a number of other head studies of women by Raimundo. (JO'D)On View
