DescriptionMaurice MacGonigal entered the stained glass studio of his uncle, Joshua Clarke, at the age of 15. A scholarship in 1923 enabled him to attend the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin. In 1925 he joined the Dublin Painters Group and in 1933 was elected a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He was later to become Professor of painting at the Metropolitan School of Art. September Morning, Connemara, is one of many paintings MacGonigal made of the west of Ireland especially Connemara, Roundstone, and near Clifden where he had a summer home. The brushstrokes of his later work tended to be looser and more direct, perhaps as a result of the rapidly changing weather conditions to which out-door painters can be subject.
