DescriptionJohn Mangan, shown here with his dog Jack was a neighbour of the artist. He is shown here in a field which was part of his garden. The painting was donated to the Gallery by Maynard Walker in memory of President Kennedy in 1965. Elaborating on the donation of the work Maynard Walker wrote in January 1966: 'The idea for giving the picture to your gallery came to me because I felt that the painting itself was so symbolic of Ireland and its people and would have appealed to our late president, as he himself knew Ireland and the suffering that goes on there. Hence it seemed to me that it had a double tie, uniting people of Irish ancestry in this country with Ireland itself and that is what I hope the painting means by being in your gallery. That is why I gave the painting in memory of President Kennedy.'On View
