DescriptionHarpignies took up painting at the age of 27 studying under Jean Achard. Mostly known for his paintings and watercolours of landscapes, he was a friend of Corot and like him travelled to Italy, extensively throughout France and also painted in the forest of Fontainebleau. Harpignies’ success brought a degree of financial independence and he exhibited at the Salon from 1853-1912.
