DescriptionThis work was exhibited when the Gallery first opened in 1908. Pairings of animals feature strongly among John Henry Monsell Furse's themes and include Lioness and Cubs, Eagle and Hare, Tigress and Wild Boar, Horses Playing and Lion and Buck. Furse was both a sculptor and a painter. He studied at Trinity College, Oxford before joining the staff of the British Museum. He began studying art under Herkomer and subsequently went to the Slade School of Art. He was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1892-1907. This sculptural group shows two horses fighting. One horse is rearing up and raising its front legs and head, while the other horse leans downwards. Both horses are standing in long grass. The piece has more qualities of carved stone than a bronze casting.
