Description'Environs de St. Tropez' is one of the many watercolours which the artist painted after his purchase of a house there in 1925 and in terms of dimensions conforms to the uniform format (55 x 75 cms) which the artist adopted after 1930. Overlooking the bay, the locale provided him with fresh inspiration and an alternative to the landscape around Paris. The artist maintained the same structured approach to composition whether working in oils or watercolour. The quality of the paper and the colours employed were an important concern and, as here, he frequently used raw sienna and ochre. His characteristic technique followed three stages: initial drawing in India ink, followed by highlighting with a wash and finally at least three sessions spent painting in watercolour. The watercolours and their effect are further enhanced by brightness of the white paper. Because of the repetitiveness of Segonzac's themes and his failure to date his works, it is dificult to establish a chronology, however, a whole series of works inspired by Provence and St. Tropez are dated from 1950 to 1970.
