DescriptionBelfast-born Joseph Devlin (1871-1934) was a prominent Irish Parliamentary Party MP and lifelong Grandmaster of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), a conservative Catholic organisation. When Dora Montefiore, a suffragette and later member of both
the Communist Party of Britain and the Communist Party of Australia, proposed the ‘Save the Kiddies’ scheme to send children of striking workers to sympathetic homes in Britain to be fed and looked after, the Catholic Church, Ancient Order of Hibernians and Arthur Griffith vociferously protested citing a malign Protestant, Atheist and British influence inherent in such an idea. As an organization, the Ancient Order of Hibernians was criticized by some Nationalist organizations for what was perceived to be the organisation’s religious intimidation and sectarianism.
