DescriptionAlthough most of his adult life was spent in London, Dillon chiefly exhibited in Ireland, holding numerous solo exhibitions both in Dublin and his native Belfast. Being a self-taught artist, he was perhaps naturally drawn to a free-form expressive style in painting. Many of his early West of Ireland subjects have a child-like quality in their apparent simplicity, flattened perspective and vivid colouring. During the 1960s and 1970s Dillon began experimenting with a variety of media and materials culminating in his exploration of collage as a form. His late works deal with the theme of the artist as clown or pierrot.
